How to unlock all characters in Risk of Rain 2 – Guide

There are several characters in Risk of Rain 2. We will show you how to unlock and play with all the characters.

There’s nothing like Risk of Rain 2 for a near-perfect 3D conversion of the classic side-scroller, and it’s a fun and challenging third-person shooter too. You must play this game with friends, especially if you have time. Getting new characters to play with also makes the game exponentially more enjoyable. There are lots of character unlocks to earn in Risk of Rain 2, but unlocking them all isn’t easy. Here’s a guide to all the character unlocks in Risk of Rain 2.

How to unlock all the characters in Risk of Rain 2?

Commando

Commando

How to unlock: Nothing

Because Commando is the default character in Risk of Rain 2, you’ll play him at least a few times before going on to someone else. But, even after dozens of hours, people keep returning to Commando. His cooldowns are quite short, and his well-rounded abilities do a fantastic job of illustrating how the fighting in Risk of Rain 2 works.

Do not assume Commando is weak just because he is the starter survivor, as he is easy to learn and fun to play. When you take the time to set up a crowd of opponents, Commando’s basic attack is fast and easy to target, and his secondary ability is even more powerful. He also possesses a simple but useful dodge to assist you to get out of trouble, as well as a rapid-fire ability that can stun most adversaries in a pinch.

MUL-T

MUL-T

How to unlock: Five times clearing the first stage

A unique feature of MUL-T is that it can switch between two basic attacks at any time. In one case, you have a short-range, fast-firing nail gun for battling crowds and bosses, while in the other case, your weapon is a long-range sniper rifle that can take out flying enemies. When you swap your basic attack, you are also swapping your Equipment (your ‘Use’ item), making MUL-T the sole survivor that can wear two items at the same time.

MUL-T’s additional powers include a quick dash that may be used to escape away from adversaries or to rush directly into them for massive damage, as well as a cluster of grenades that cause minor damage but stun enemies significantly. MUL-T is about efficiently shifting primary strikes while controlling large targets and crowds with your dash and stun grenades. This robot is a lot of fun to play with, especially because you have two different pieces of equipment to explore with.

Huntress

How to unlock: Completing the first three stages without dying is a must.

Whereas the Commando excels at single-target damage, the Huntress reigns supreme in AoE. Her auto main strike is sluggish and rather weak, but she is quite adept at melting groups. Her secondary ability, a ricocheting glaive, may bounce between up to six adversaries, so use it only when you’re certain it’ll strike at least two. If you hurl it against a lone person, it will vanish after only one hit, wasting valuable damage.

Huntress may also rain down arrows on a specific place, doing damage over time to everything nearby. This is your go-to boss DPS ability, and keeping the charge mid-air may also put you out of range of many ground adversaries. Finally, Huntress possesses one of the finest escape skills in the game: teleportation. This ability takes you where you want to go, therefore it may also be used as a leap. Huntress was my favorite character in the first game, and she’s just as powerful in Risk of Rain 2.

Engineer

Engineer

How to unlock: 30 levels must be completed.

Turret placement and defense are all about the Engineer. Additionally, he can deploy proximity mines, create a bubble shield that blocks all external attacks, and fire bouncing grenades as his basic attack. His specialty, however, is turrets. Your turrets will automatically begin dealing massive damage to all nearby enemies once deployed.

All of the objects you collect help them. In other words, if you obtain an item that increases your attack speed, it will also increase the attack speed of your turrets. Some items scale enormously as a result of this synergy, such as the Bustling Fungus, which effectively converts your turrets into healing stations. The problem is that your turrets have a significant cooldown, so you can’t just put them down. Find a large gathering of foes, position your turrets in the midst of them, drop a shield and some mines, and watch those pups do their business.

Artificer

Artificer survivor
Artificer character in Risk of Rain 2

How to unlock: To get her out of the Newt Shop, you’ll need to spend 10 Lunar Coins. Lunar Coins are dropped by enemies at random, so grab them when you see them. When you clear the stage, the blue doorway to the Newt Shop will emerge at random, but you may force it to occur by spending one Lunar Coin at a Newt Altar (before using the Teleporter). The Artificer may be found in a block of ice adjacent to the Great Newt himself.

A traditional wizard, an Artificer can control fire, ice, and lightning. As with any mage, she is good at managing cooldowns and blending ingredients. Fireballs with a charging mechanism are one of her basic attacks. If you run out of charges, you’ll be unable to attack. Even though your fireballs recharge rapidly, this ability might be confusing at first, especially if you’re used to someone like Commando who can repeat his basic strike with impunity. The Artificer’s fireball, once you get used to it, is immensely powerful.

Her additional skills are linked to particular elements. She possesses a lightning orb, which she may charge before using to extend its range and strength. This causes a lot of damage and stuns on contact, plus it zaps adjacent foes as it travels through the air, so aim it between a bunch of lesser enemies and one big guy.

Because the Artificer cannot evade or teleport, you’ll have to rely on this ice wall to keep crowds under control. Finally, you have a good old-fashioned flamethrower at your disposal. Because it causes a lot of damage but has a small range, it’s best utilized on adversaries that have been stunned by your lightning orb. Keep an eye on your cooldowns and pick up some mobility-enhancing gear, and you’ll be slinging spells like a pro in no time.

Mercenary

Mercenary
Mercenary

How to unlock: To reach the Obelisk, you must complete seven levels. When you complete the seventh step, a Celestial Portal will open. Make your way to the Obelisk at the end of a floating passageway within, and opt to “Obliterate” yourself when asked. This will conclude your run and give you access to the Mercenary. You can either obliterate yourself once again to acquire five Lunar Coins, which will help you unlock the Artificer, or you can return to the Celestial Portal to resume your run.

Mercenary differs from the other survivors in Risk of Rain 2 since he is the sole melee character. You may assume that a sword-wielding man in a third-person shooter would be clumsy, but you’d be incorrect. Mercenary is one of the more frantic play styles of the bunch, and when used properly, he can destroy bosses and groups.

His primary strike is a close-range sword swipe, although you’ll seldom ever utilize it. The cooldowns for Mercenary’s abilities are so minimal that you may chain them together virtually endlessly. His secondary ability teleports you to the nearest adversary and fires a lengthy flurry of strikes, while his ultimate ability sends you into a horizontal sword spin on the ground and a vertical sword spin in midair.

Bandit

How to unlock: Complete one of the third stages

Bandit unlocks once you survive three stages without dying in one run. Activating the teleporter and defeating the boss are the only ways to clear a stage.

Whether you play solo or in a multiplayer party, this can be done on any difficulty setting. It is recommended that you bump the difficulty down to ‘Drizzle’ (Easy) if you are not able to complete all three stages.

Rex

Rex

How to unlock: Power Plant

To unleash Rex, you’ll need to fulfill three tasks: first, at the start of a new run, grab the battery pack from the rear of your escape pod. The aim is to maintain the item in your inventory until you reach Abyssal Depths, which is the fourth stage.

Carrying this item, however, comes with a catch: if your Survivor’s health dips below 50% at any moment, the battery pack will explode, killing you instantly and finishing your journey. Once you’ve arrived at the Abyssal Depths, use the jump jets on the ground to go to the stage’s highest point. A deactivated Rex is lying on a little platform near the top. Rex may be unlocked as a Survivor by inserting the power pack inside him.

Loader

Loader
Loader

How to unlock: Guidance Offline

You must beat the Alloy Worship Unit monster in the Siren’s Call stage to unlock Loader. The hitch is that the boss will only appear if Siren’s Call is the fourth level you’ve visited. This means you’ll either have to keep playing until you receive a lucky roll, or you’ll have to finish a third level and access Siren’s Call through the Newt Shop’s portals.

Start hunting for and destroying blue vulture egg nests strewn around Siren’s Call after you’ve arrived. If you damage enough things, a message will come on the screen saying, “You hear a distant whirring…” Keep destroying nests until a second message appears that reads, “The whirring grows loud…”

In the middle of the map, the Alloy Worship Unit will spawn. In the process, you’ll unlock Loader after defeating this boss, earning the ‘Guidance Offline’ achievement.

Acrid

Acrid
Acrid

How to unlock: To Be Left Alone

You must stabilize the cells in the Void Fields, which is only accessible via the Bazaar Between Time secret realm, to open Acrid. You’ll discover a set of enormous beams beneath the road to the Bazaar that you may drop down upon. Continue down until you reach a fog-engulfed tunnel that emits a yellow glow.

When you enter the tunnel, you’ll notice a dark gateway leading to the Void Fields. Start looking for Void Cells once you’ve entered the stage, which is signaled by purple beacons in the sky.

You’ll have to approach nine of these Void Cells and survive until the procedure is complete for each of them. Every Void Cell has a protective zone around it that you may stand in to heal while it charges.

Leaving the charging phase’s safety zone will lead you to receive damage and expose you to foes that will constantly spawn. Enemies will despawn as soon as a cell is fully charged, and the safety zone will continue to decrease until it vanishes altogether, allowing you a few additional seconds to regain your health.

You should obtain the “…To Be Left Alone” accomplishment after charging all nine cells, unlocking Acrid in the process.

Captain

Captain

How to unlock: Washed Away

If you don’t mind spoilers, simply know that beating Risk of Rain is required to unlock Captain. To visit Commencement, the game’s last stage, you must first reach Sky Meadow and then line the teleporter with the moon.

After being relocated to Commencement, the game will begin to generate very difficult monsters that you must defeat to reach Mithrix, RoR2’s final fight. Mithrix has a set of techniques, but he can do massive amounts of damage, so keep your distance during the fight. After defeating Mithrix, you must board a spacecraft to flee the planet before the moon self-destructs. To complete the game and unlock Captain as a playable character, defend the rescue ship for one minute.

Heretic (Secret Character)

Heretic
Heretic

How to unlock: None

Kur-skan, also known as Heretic, is a hidden unlockable Survivor who can’t be chosen from the character selection screen. You must gather the following four pieces from the Heresy set in a single run to change into him:

Hooks of Heresy

Visions of Heresy

Essence of Heresy

Strides of Heresy

The current technique for collecting every item is to finish the Blockade Breaker Challenge by beating 15 bosses in a single run. This contains bosses that spawn naturally in stages, as well as teleporter bosses. This is something you’ll have to do every time you wish to play as Heretic.
